The book documents the evolution of a copper plate’s surface, illustrating its journey from smoothness to roughness and back to smoothness through the continual creation of marks. White symbolizes absence, while black signifies presence. As the accumulation of marks over time reaches an extreme, presence gradually fades, eventually returning to nothingness.
